F.M. Alexander 1869-1955
The Alexander Technique was founded by F.M. Alexander (pictured below) who developed the Technique in the 1890s in Australia.
How the Technique was developed
Alexander was originally a Shakespearean reciter who found that after a few years in the profession he experienced hoarseness that sometimes led to a complete loss of his voice.
Finding the treatment from his doctor to be unsatisfactory, Alexander decided to work out for himself what was causing the problem. He quickly realised that it was something that he was doing to himself that was causing the hoarseness to recur. This led to a journey of self-discovery and experimentation that culminated in the formation of the Alexander Technique.
He moved to London in the Spring of 1904 and remained there for most of his life teaching and training teachers until 1955.
